Worried Japanese Love

Part One

If I could speak your language,
Love, we could share the stage,
And your face would be in front of me
Not on the video case.

(Or photobooks, wherein you sprawl,
Where you smile— and pose—
In that cut-out world of You.
Aishiteru, aishiteru, but no one knows.)

I’d write you hiragana,
Play script in vert’cal lines.
But I write poems horizontal
And I speak only sighs.

(It’s plastic passion that I scrawl.
But it’s real— so true—
Worshipping your soul, your hands,
Your acting, can’t help but aishiteru.)

Part Two

In your words, I could tell you twenty times
One message, and that’s all.
In my tongue, three words seem insufficient,
To describe such a wingless fall.

In your words, Shakespeare still is beautiful;
Yes, you too, love, preserved him.
In my tongue, only Shakespeare finds the words
To sing the unsingable hymn.

In your words, I must take care to not offend
And use the appropriate name.
In my tongue, we share just one precipice;
Our eyes all look the same.

Part Three

I have koi ni ochiru’d with you
And I am koisuru too.
And although it is a hiren,
It is renai— destined to be shitsuren.

One is Ai, who’s always giving—
There are two loves in Japanese—
The other’s Koi— the Want of love.
So one’s out there, in love, but living,
The other can’t think or breathe.

They say that koi wa moumoku,
And love makes all men brothers.
But with you, it’ll never be soushi-souai;
The tragedy; you don’t know me.
Thus we’re somewhat hesitant lovers.

I worked it out the other day, I've been in love with at least 5 men who didn't love me back. D'aw. One day.

Aaanyway, here is a glossary of the Japanese terms. I love how accurate the language is for such obscure, and personal heartache.

Aishiteru; I love you
Hiragana; Japanese script
Koi ni ochiru; fall in love
Koisuru; in love
Hiren; sad love
Renai; true love
Shitsuren; disappointed love
Ai; selfless love
Koi; selfish love
Koi wa moumoku; love is blind
Soushi-souai; requited love
